Cloudian
Cloudian is a packaged software cloud storage platform with robust Amazon S3 API compatibility. It provides high volume, multi-tenant, and multi-datacenter cloud storage, and is architected to support multiple NOSQL storage backends for maximum flexibility. With features like virtualized resources, user groups, quality of service controls, access control rights, reporting and billing, Cloudian enables Enterprise and Service Providers to rapidly deploy turnkey public and private clouds on low cost commodity hardware. Cloudian's robust S3 API compatibility allows enterprises and Service Providers to benefit from the richness and variety of applications in the Amazon Web Services ecosystem.
OpenStack
OpenStack is a global collaboration of developers and cloud computing technologists producing the ubiquitous open source cloud computing platform for public and private clouds. The project aims to deliver solutions for all types of clouds by being simple to implement, massively scalable, and feature rich. The technology consists of a series of interrelated projects delivering various components for a cloud infrastructure solution. These Projects are:
- OPENSTACK COMPUTE (Nova): open source software and standards for large-scale deployments of automatically provisioned virtual compute instances.
- OPENSTACK OBJECT STORAGE (Swift): open source software and standards for large-scale, redundant storage of static objects.
- OPENSTACK IMAGE SERVICE (Glance): provides discovery, registration, and delivery services for virtual disk images.
Cloudian and Nova
There are several advantages to the combinations of Cloudian and Nova, but the two major ones are:
- Applications running in the Nova environment can now store and retrieve data using the Cloudian system via S3 API. Therefore Nova applications have immediate access to a robust storage system using the de-facto S3 standard API. Existing applications from the S3 ecosystem requiring robust S3 API support can now run in Nova using Cloudian for data storage.
- These Applications can now take advantage of the full set of Billing, Provisioning and Management capabilities which are an integral part of Cloudian. While often considered as second priority, these capabilities are key when deploying mission critical applications in today's demanding environments.
Cloudian and Swift
- Applications can now choose to use Swift or Cloudian, based on their API and feature requirements.
- Applications can also simultaneously store data in both Cloudian and Swift systems.
- Service providers can provide both Swift API and S3 API based public and private cloud solutions.
Cloudian and Glance
- Glance allows Nova virtual machine (VM) images to be stored to Amazon's S3 service. With a simple configuration change, Glance users can now choose between storing VM images in their private system running Cloudian software, or Amazon's S3 service.
- Glance can restore a Nova VM by launching a VM image stored in Cloudian in Nova.
The Gemini Cloudian - OpenStack distribution includes the latest release of Nova, Swift, Glance and Cloudian. In addition, the Cloudian-OpenStack distribution includes the following tools from the S3 ecosystem:
- s3cmd (open source tool from s3tools.org), which allows easy command line manipulation of S3 storage without knowing any details of the S3 API, and
- boto (open source python S3 library by Mitche Garnaat), which allows applications to easily use S3 storage without learning the details of the S3 API.
